The swimming venue at the 2012 London Olympics will be in the Olympic Stadium. How will they work that?
That’s what they said last night right at the end of the coverage of the Winter Olympics when that did that segment wwhere they looked ahead to London. Since London receives rain, often heavy rain lasting for days (along with the accompanying lightning, of course), and it’s cool to cold there, even in the summer, the stadium would have to have a retractable dome to host swimming. That wouldn’t be that hard to ddo. But the stadium would also have to have a retractable floor with the pool underneath the floor. Of course, that could be done. The University of Phoenix Stadium, where the Arizona Cardinals play, has a field on rollers, that rolls out into the parking lot so that the natural grass can stay alive when games aren’t being played. So I guess they could do something like that with the stadium in London. But I’d be interested to see what they do.
Swimming will not be in the the Olympic Stadium. A separate Aquatics Centre is being built as part of the Olympic Park complex, which will also include the Olympic Stadium, Basketball Arena, Handball Arena, Velodrome and Field Hockey Centre.
