Natural Swimming Pools or Natural Swimming Ponds – a European Development
Natural swimming pools (NSP’s) utilize a biological purification system to clean the water. This invention, which has been developed and refined over the last 20 years in Europe, has now found its way to North America. A wide range of design options are available today, from a nature-oriented swimming pond to a super luxurious pool with fully biological water treatment. What is common to all the designs is that costly disinfection technology and UV radiation are no longer needed.
Being close to nature – in naturally purified water in a natural landscape has a calming and relaxing effect. Here shallow sand and gravel beaches that are reminiscent of a beach vacation; there a stately, luxury pool atmosphere. Here inviting boardwalks that swing over lush shores and turn the pool into the artistic highlight of a garden. There entire water landscapes with streams and small waterfalls. The NSP fits in with all property styles. You can even build a classic, geometrically shaped swimming pool And an existing swimming pool can be converted into an NSP.
The basic idea of the NSP is simple: A part of the pool is used for bathing while the other part serves for regeneration and treatment of the pool water. No chemicals are used. Only the natural, biological purification processes that occur in the water treatment area ensure hygienic, clean water. The task of the planner is to create the framework conditions for a stable ecological balance and to integrate them into a closed system based on nature. As a rule, the swimming zone and the regeneration zone of a pool exist in a 1:1 area ratio. The more water there is, the more stable it is and thus the smaller the water treatment facility needs to be. For NSP’s, experts recommend supporting technology for water circulation.

Building a natural swimming pool?
Any body know anything about building a natural swimming pool? I want to build one but my backyard is about a 40% slope – just wanted an idea of how I could accomplish building one on a slope.
I’m in the US where most people don’t know about them, so I’m pretty much on my own.
Oh – and can’t I put in a waterfall, instead of an air pump?
Natural in appearance? Or Natural in operation/sanitation?
Your yard sounds challenging if you have slopes up your pool can be paced near them. The front side of the pool would be normal elevation while the back would be built up like a wall with the waterfall incorporated in it. If your slope goes down and you have a great view not of your fence you can build a pool that goes the other way.
Air Pump??
If you want a natural swimming pool go for a pond with fish in it. There’s your natural.
