Can I use ultraviolet lamps as bactericide for my swimming pool and reduce the chlorine concentration?
What kind of UV lamps would do? I’d activate them off pool operation hours. In an extreme scenario, could I use tanning lamps and even leave them on while te pool is being used? It wouldn’t be much different from the real solar radiation.
Any experience so far?
UV or O3 gas is already used in the swimming pool industry as a supplement to other types of sanitation. Basically there is a box installed near the pool equipment that has a UV bulb in it, and the O3 gas generated by this bulb is pumped into the pool water via tubing connecting to the equipment. Unfortunately, it is not potent enough to be a stand alone sanitizer. The levels of O3 gas you would need to sanitize an entire pool completely would be very unhealthy for human beings considering how reactive this particular gas is with organic tissues.
The units they sell are called “Ozoneators”, and are very popular in AZ. Although I don’t know about availability in your area, but you might want to check your local pool service companies for an estimate and/or availability.
